De Engelse dichter Shelley schreef dat hij naast Plato alleen Calderòn nog het lezen waard achtte. De Russische romancier Toergenjev schreef na het lezen van Het leven is droom dat hij 'volledig gecalderoniseerd' was. De Duitse filosoof Schopenhauer noemde het 'het filosofische toneelstuk bij uitstek'. Ook beroemdheden als Goethe en Madame de Staël vereerden Calderòn.Hoewel het werk al vaak in het Nederlands is vertaald, is dit de eerste vertaling waarin de oorspronkelijke dichtvorm is gehandhaafd. Het resultaat zal niet alleen toneelmakers, maar ook poëzieliefhebbers aanspreken. Hispanist Erik Coenen heeft zijn vertaling bovendien voorzien van verklarende noten en een uitvoerig nawoord, waarin hij ingaat op de vorm, de stijl, de betekenis en de context van het werk, en een toelichting geeft op zijn manier van vertalen.
